A brighter future for human rights defenders

In policy and in practice, PBI is redoubling its efforts to protect human rights defenders

No other organisation in the world supports threatened human rights defenders in the way PBI does. And we are evolving our strategy in order to make sure we’re as effective as possible, not only in protecting human rights defenders, but in preventing human rights abuses from occurring in the first place.

After 40 years of work for peace and rights, we are adapting our activities in order to:

  • Apply our unique protective accompaniment model in a way that responds to the widespread criminalisation of Indigenous communities defending the environment against extractive projects in Central America.

  • Develop innovative tactics to protect women leaders in particularly challenging locations such as Nicaragua and Kenya, ensuring our strategies respond to the unique threats and challenges facing women defenders.

  • Resist the UK government’s attempts to roll back rights, and push for better regulation of business behaviour.

  • Ensure that human rights lawyers have the tools they need to fight for justice in Honduras, peace in Colombia, and accountability in Indonesia.

We cannot do this without your support, so please donate what you can.

What makes PBI unique remains the same – it’s our teams in conflict zones and complicated contexts around the world. PBI volunteers are trained to protect the brave activists standing up for rights and the environment in the face of death threats, smear campaigns and murder attempts.

We go where others don’t, we stay there, and we connect the situation on the ground to the corridors of power and the desks of decision-makers. We stand alongside human rights defenders, we learn from them, and echo their voices. We keep them safe, and we work to ensure their voices are heard.

And now we are doing more than ever to get the voices of human rights defenders heard in the policy spaces that might prevent abuses in the first place. In the UK, this means advocating for a government human rights policy with defenders at its core, and working towards stronger legislation on corporate accountability.

We will also resist rollback on rights at home, working to prevent the UK Government from ripping up the Human Rights Act and placing undue restrictions on protest.

Now, more than ever, the world needs human rights defenders. Now, more than ever, human rights defenders need your support. Please give today to protect human rights activism.
