OUR STRATEGY

Our Strategy (2023–2027)

PBI UK catalyses resources, action, and advocacy to support threatened human rights defenders. Our 2023–2027 strategy focuses on four key goals to ensure that those standing up for justice and the environment are kept safe and heard.

1. Resourcing the Front Line

We ensure PBI’s field projects in countries like Colombia, Guatemala, Kenya, and Mexico have the financial resources and volunteer capacity to provide life-saving protective accompaniment.

  • The Goal: To increase our financial contributions to field work and facilitate expansion into new countries by 2028.

2. Mobilising UK Civil Society

We harness the collective power of the UK's legal, academic, and journalistic sectors. By building expert networks, we provide defenders with the high-level legitimacy and technical support they need to challenge power safely.

  • The Goal: Strengthening the Lawyers Advisory Committee and building deeper ties between UK professionals and global movements.

3. Influencing Government & Business Policy

We lobby the UK Government and international bodies to move beyond rhetoric and provide concrete protection for defenders. We also advocate for stronger regulations to ensure businesses respect human rights and the environment.

  • The Goal: To be a leading voice in UK coalitions, ensuring that the "London Link" results in real policy change for activists overseas.

4. Building a Sustainable PBI UK

To protect others, we must be strong ourselves. We are investing in our own infrastructure, digital resilience, and fundraising diversity to remain an agile and independent shield for years to come.

  • The Goal: Growing our annual budget to £1,000,000 to drastically increase our impact and support for defenders.

Our Priority Areas

While we support all defenders at risk, our current strategy prioritises those facing the highest levels of systemic violence:

  • Land & Environmental Defenders: Protecting the guardians of our planet and ancestral lands.

  • Women & LGBTQI+ Rights: Standing with those fighting gender-based violence and discrimination.

  • Peace & Rule of Law: Supporting the lawyers and journalists who uphold democracy.

Theory of Change: How your support creates a shift

Our model is built on a simple but powerful logic: If defenders are safe, resilient, and connected to international networks, they can effectively demand state accountability. Your support provides the "space" for that change to happen.
