Stephen Cragg KC joins PBI UK to coordinate new Ambassadors Network

PBI UK is delighted to announce that Stephen Cragg KC has joined us as Coordinating Ambassador.

PBI UK’s Ambassadors Network will replace what was previously known as our Patrons, and is made up of individuals who combine long-standing specialist expertise with a passion for empowering human rights defenders in order to provide support for PBI UK’s work. As Coordinating Ambassador, Stephen will take on additional responsibilities for helping to refresh and expand the network, ensuring that it is as effective as possible.

Stephen is a human rights Barrister at Doughty Street Chambers, where he leads the Data Protection and Information Rights Team. He also sits as a judge in the Information Rights Tribunal. He has extensive experience in the higher courts, including the UK’s Supreme Court, the European Court of Human Rights and other international courts. He was Chair of the Bar Human Rights Committee of England and Wales (BHRC) for the two-year period 2022-23, and is now a member of BHRC’s Advisory Board. He was formerly Chair of the board of trustees for the Public Law Project.

Upon joining the Ambassadors Network, Stephen said “PBI UK is such a special organisation, with its emphasis on the protection of front-line human rights defenders, linked with wider strategic and legal advocacy on behalf of the communities it works with. I was privileged to liaise closely with PBI UK during my time as Chair of BHRC. I’m greatly looking forward to developing the role for Ambassadors in support of PBI UK’s vital work”.

His fellow Ambassadors include Sir Nicolas Bratza, Lord Carnwath, John Dew, Julie Christie, Professor Jeffrey Jowell KC, Helena Kennedy KC (Baroness Kennedy of The Shaws), Sir Peter Roth and Lord Scott of Foscote.

As part of PBI UK’s push to reinvigorate its Ambassadors Network, we are seeking to appoint new Ambassadors who can bring expertise from the arts, the media, NGOs and government. If you are interested in joining, or would like to suggest other candidates, please contact admin@peacebrigades.org.uk.
