Judicial independence at risk

Join PBI UK, ABColombia, Federation of European Bars, Colombian Caravana of UK Lawyers, CAFOD, CINEP, and CALDH for a virtual roundtable on judicial independence. Our fantastic panel will be discussing key cases from Colombia and Guatemala, and highlighting what the international community can do to support defenders at risk

We are privileged to have speaking at this event International Criminal Court Judge, Joanna Korner QC who, reflecting on her knowledge and experience of Colombia and Guatemala, will examine the importance of trial management in obtaining justice for victims.

Hector Reyes, Director of the Guatemalan Centre for Legal Action on Human Rights will examine the situation in Guatemala 25 years after the signing of the Peace Accord. Guatemala is going through a political and institutional crisis and is experiencing major setbacks in matters of justice and human rights, that are impacting particularly on indigenous peoples and women.

While in Colombia, Julian Salazar of the Popular Research and Education Center Program for Peace will discuss the Colombian Transitional Justice system created by the Peace Accord signed in 2016.

They will be joined by Lizzette Robleto de Howarth from the Law Society of England and Wales and Louise Winstanley from ABColombia.
