PBI Colombia Call for Volunteers

Apply by November 27th to participate in PBI Colombia’s Volunteer Training and Selection Process for 2023

Peace Brigades International Colombia is looking for dedicated people to join the project’s field teams from 2023. 

PBI provides accompaniment, training and visibility to individuals and organisations that defend human rights and the environment and raise awareness about the human rights situation in Colombia.

Field volunteers are immersed in a culturally rich community and have the opportunity to build relationships with the PBI team, partner organisations and accompanied defenders. Volunteering with PBI offers a profound experience of working side by side with human rights defenders with a globally respected international peace and human rights organisations with over 40 years of experience protecting, supporting and empowering human rights defenders and communities. Prior to deployment, volunteers receive hands-on training in nonviolent action, political analysis and advocacy and security and protection tools. 

Selected applicants will participate in a week of training from March 25th to April 1st, and be deployed to volunteer for 18 months in Colombia starting from May 2023. 

Accepted volunteers will be placed in one of PBI’s Field Teams in Apartadó, Barrancabermeja or Bogotá.

What we look for

Prospective volunteers should:

  • Be fluent in Spanish

  • Have a high level of discretion and diplomacy

  • Be able to work in a fast paced environment under conditions of pressure and stress

  • Have or be willing to learn about the history, politics and culture of Colombia

  • Be empathetic, compassionate and have a high level of cultural sensitivity

  • Have previous experience of of work, volunteering or activism with local or national organisations in the peace, human rights or social justice sector

  • Practical knowledge and skills such as IT, accounting, writing, group facilitation etc. is always a plus.

Nationals of Colombia are unfortunately not able to apply, however we encourage you to check out our other projects for volunteer opportunities. 

As a high level of maturity is required, most volunteers are 25 years or older.

While volunteer work is unpaid, PBI will cover:

  • Round trip tickets from country of residence 

  • A monthly stipend for individual expenses of approximately 275 euros/ month   

  • All work and living expenses (accomodations, maintenance, medical insurance, etc.) 

  • Financial support for a trip to country of residence 

  • Vacation, monthly days off, mental health days and other leave in accordance with project policies

  • Visa, vaccination and travel expenses
