Are you keen to work for human rights and peace? Have you ever wondered what it’s like to volunteer with PBI? Join us for an informative and interactive webinar to find out!

When: Sunday, 23 October at 7:00pm UK.

What: You’ll hear from current and former volunteers who have provided support and protection to human rights defenders in Mexico and Honduras, and find out about current volunteering opportunities.

Participating in the webinar will be:

Andrew Miller: A former volunteer for PBI in Colombia, Andrew is now Director of Advocacy for Amazon Watch. Since 2007, Andrew has collaborated closely with indigenous partners from across the Americas to advocate with institutions including multilateral banks, the U.S. government, and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. He travels regularly to the Amazon region and frequently appears on broadcast media including CNN and the BBC. Since his time in PBI, Andrew has also worked at Amnesty International, and with southern Sudanese community-based organisations.

Roslynn Beighton: Roslynn is a graduate in human geography and human rights. She has carried out voluntary work for grassroots groups advancing the rights of women, LGBTQI+ collectives, minorities, indigenous peoples, migrants and refugees, and other peoples under threat in the UK and abroad. Roslynn was drawn to PBI due to its accompaniment work and collaborative, consensus-based decision making model. She interned with PBI in the UK before eventually becoming a field volunteer in Honduras.

Duna Manent Puigjaner: A graduate in political science and human rights, Duna is the Training Coordinator for PBI Mexico. Her work focuses on recruiting, training and supporting volunteers throughout their collaboration with PBI. She’s passionate about gender mainstreaming in peace-building and is a volunteering enthusiast.

Clara van Tienhoven Amil: Clara studied political science, international law and peace-building before volunteering with PBI Mexico. Having spent time volunteering in Chihuahua and Oaxaca, Clara is currently the Volunteer Coordinator for PBI’s team in Mexico City.

Volunteering with PBI:

PBI volunteers live and work as part of culturally diverse and horizontally-structured international teams. They provide protective accompaniment, support, and solidarity to individuals, communities, grassroots movements and NGOs fighting against impunity and violence whilst protecting environmental rights, women’s rights, minority rights and access to justice.

Volunteers also carry out communications, advocacy and capacity development activities, and support the day-to-day operations of their team and the broader organisation.

A day in the life of a PBI volunteer is never the same!

Prior to deployment, PBI volunteers receive specialised training, based on more than 40 years of experience working for human rights and peace. PBI’s hands-on training weeks include sessions on the political and social history of the country and that of local non-violent resistance, conflict transformation and peace-building movements.

Prospective volunteers also receive training in human rights observance and analysis, advocacy and lobbying, security and protection, networking and coalition-building, as well as communications campaigns and administrative tasks related to the organisation’s strategy.

As well as through its Field Projects, PBI offers opportunities to volunteer for its UK and other offices.
