YOUR DONATIONS DOUBLED! When you support human rights defenders this week

The Big Give is an opportunity to double your donation to PBI, and help us protect human rights defenders and get their voices heard in 2023!

2022 has been a big year for PBI UK, as we have redoubled our support for threatened human rights activists. Among other activities, we have:

  • Welcomed human rights defenders from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia, Kenya, Nepal and Indonesia to the UK on advocacy tours - working together to get their voices heard!

  • Joined the campaign for a Business, Human Rights and Environment Act, working with the Corporate Justice Campaign to encourage politicians to properly regulate UK companies and reduce environmental and human rights abuses globally.

  • Acted as a bridge between the UK legal community and threatened defenders globally, so that international lawyers can provide support to those on the front line.

  • Channeled resources to our Field Projects, where PBI volunteers provide protective accompaniment to some of the most at-risk human rights defenders - standing alongside them as they carry out their work, campaigning to reduce the threats they face, and training communities and organisations in security strategies to keep themselves safe.

But we need your support to expand and tailor our support in 2023. With your help we will:

  • Raise more funds and recruit more field volunteers to provide protection to human rights defenders through our projects in Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Nepal and Nicaragua.

  • Organise and lead a high-profile delegation of lawyers to Central America to carry out a fact-finding mission and shine a light on human rights abuses and threats against defenders there.

  • Work with UK Embassies around the world so that they take effective action to support human rights defenders at risk and advocate with local governments for their protection.

  • Carry out a global campaign with land, environmental and Indigenous defenders to get their voices heard on policy issues.

  • Facilitate encounters between women’s rights activists from around the world so that they can share security, advocacy and solidarity strategies.

  • Provide legal, security and advocacy support to those human rights lawyers and other defenders working to ensure transitional justice in Colombia, Honduras and Nepal.

The Big Give matches pound for pound, so please give generously by December 6th!

  • By donating just £20 today, we will get £40, which will allow us to send a trained PBI volunteer to provide protective accompaniment to indigenous leaders resisting destructive mining projects in rural Guatemala.

  • By donating £30, we get £60, which will we can use to translate key advocacy messages from threatened activists and ensure they reach decision-makers in London, at the UN, and around the world.

  • A donation of £500 would get £1,000 to PBI! This would pay for a threatened activist to travel to the UK and demand action. This is what Mexican human rights defender Diana Villalobos did last month, when we organised meetings with the Foreign Office, politicians, lawyers and NGOs. She spoke about the threats to Indigenous communities and the need for justice in Mexico. Since then UK politicians, officials, diplomats and NGOs have all taken direct action to support Diana and the communities she works with.
