Welcoming our new Director: Charmain Mohamed
We are delighted to announce that Charmain Mohamed will be joining us as our new Director from May 11, 2026. She takes over from Ben Leather, who has led Peace Brigades International (PBI) UK with great dedication since 2022 and will work alongside Charmain during a structured handover period over the next month to ensure a smooth transition.
Charmain brings over two decades of experience at the heart of the international human rights system, a career defined by strategic vision and solidarity with those whose rights are under threat. Her career spans the United Nations, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, the Norwegian Refugee Council, and The Elders Foundation; working across some of the world's most complex humanitarian and human rights crises, from East Timor, Sri Lanka and Palestine to the Syria response. Charmain holds an LLM in International Human Rights Law and also spends time volunteering locally in north London with a refugee welcome group.
"I am honoured to be joining PBI at such a critical moment for human rights globally. I look forward to building on the organisation's deep roots and working with our partners and supporters to drive meaningful change." - Charmain Mohamed, incoming UK Director, Peace Brigades International (PBI)
We are enormously grateful to Ben for everything he has brought to PBI UK over the past four years: his commitment, energy and leadership have made a lasting mark on the organisation and we wish him all the very best for the future.
With Charmain's appointment, PBI UK enters its next chapter from a position of strength - grounded in experience, clear in its mission, and ready to build on the exceptional work of recent years in order to provide sustainable protection and support to human rights and environmental defenders worldwide. We look forward to introducing Charmain to our wider community of supporters, partners, and friends in the weeks ahead.
