In the early hours of the 7th of July 2019, the trans activist and sex worker Bessy Ferrera, was shot dead. Bessy was a member of LGBTQI+ organisation ArcoIris and a focal point within the “Rights Here and Now” Platform.Bessy Ferrera was a transgender and sex rights defender and member of Arcoíris, an organisation that provides support to LGBTI+ persons who are victims of violence, works on awareness initiatives, promotes HIV prevention programmes, and lobbies the Honduran government to advance LGBTI+ rights in the country.

As pride month reaches its culmination, LGBTI people across the world are participating in marches and events proudly showing they exist and are part of our communities. In many countries, however, LGBTI people are still discriminated against and human rights defenders working so that LGBTI people can enjoy their fundamental rights face threats, attacks and criminalisation.

PBI Guatemala condemns the cruel murder of Evelyn Robles, a trans activist found dead on November 18 . Evelyn Robles was accompanied by PBI between 2006 and 2009, due to the threats she faced after having witnessed the extrajudicial execution of Paulina Marrot, another trans activist, in January 2006. Evelyn Robles had identified agents of the National Civil Police as being the authors of this crime, during which she herself was seriously injured. To this day, the murder of Paulina continues in impunity.

This alert is due to the deteriorating security situation of the LGBT organisation Arcoiris, who have seen 6 of their members murdered since June last year, 5 of these since PBI began accompanying them in July. The situation culminated in the murder of Paola Barraza, a member of Arcoiris' group of trans women known as Grupo Muñecas and member of Arcoiris' board of directors for more than eight years who was murdered on January 24th, 2016.

The dedication and struggle of human rights defenders like Jorge López represent a beacon of hope for beleaguered LGBT communities in Guatemala.The director of Guatemala City-based organisation OASIS has been on the receiving end of threats, assaults and spurious criminal charges for his work defending the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities. Despite this, he continues working tirelessly, offering through OASIS a broad programme of services, training and advice, as well as documenting and reporting the human rights violations, exclusion and discrimination suffered by LGBT communities in his country.
